Handfasting is a centuries old tradition which symbolises the union of 2 individuals by binding their hands together with cords or ribbons; it represents the start of their journey, side by side through life and is where the phrase ‘tying the knot’ comes from. It was a very common practice across the UK but its significance waned as Christian beliefs and traditions became more dominant in our land. In 1753 the legitimacy of handfastings was completely abolished when the Marriage Act (England & Wales) decreed that to be legally binding a wedding must occur in a religious building. The tradition of handfasting all but died out except in the most rural parts of England and Wales, it also experienced cultural decline in Scotland but aspects of the ceremony did survive in some forms, for example in "Gretna Green" on the Scottish borders, where eloping couples from England participated in a form of handfasting conducted by the village blacksmith.
Handfasting today
In the last few decades, people have felt less inclined to follow the rigid rules of church tradition. As well as this, people have started to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world and our place within it. These factors have led to Handfasting Ceremonies gaining in popularity again. Many couples are drawn to the romantic and visually striking elements of the ritual along with its symbolism, flexibility, and ability to be customized to reflect their personal beliefs and values. The traditional view of only allowing men to speak at a wedding seems outdated whereas in a handfasting mothers, fathers, friends and family all contribute, this strikes many people as much more balanced for modern society. The diverse range of spiritual and secular beliefs in the UK have also led people to consider other options for their marriage, handfasting offers a way to celebrate a union that is deeply personal and uniquely tailored to the couple's shared vision.
Handfasting ceremonies today can be seen as a blend of ancient tradition and modern practices, reflecting a growing desire for ceremonies that are not only meaningful but also inclusive. You don't have to be Pagan to appreciate the beauty of these ceremonies. Many Christians and individuals from other faiths choose handfasting because it is a profound and memorable way to celebrate and deepen a couple's connection. Handfastings allow couples to create ceremonies that resonate with their values and beliefs, whether they wish to nod to ancestral practices, express their spirituality, or create a unique way to celebrate love, handfasting continues to be one of the most beautiful and unique ways for couples to express their commitment to each other and incorporate their family and friends in the ceremony.
As a Pagan priest, my approach to handfasting ceremonies is deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of the Celtic faith. My ceremonies are informed by my extensive training as a Celtic Pagan priest and my initiation into an order of priests in the UK. I am a member of the Pagan Federation and I live and breathe this religion. My handfastings are not just rituals; they are personal and engaging events that involve family and friends in a way that celebrant-led ceremonies often do not. I am capable of bringing many Celtic elements into the ceremony; this creates a deeper more spiritual experience than most celebrants can offer and will give you an authentic, immersive experience that goes beyond the surface, creating a richer and more meaningful ceremony. Many people who have attended my handfastings have told me that they had previously experienced other ceremonies, but none were as unique and heartfelt as those I perform.
